The Prime Minister of Iraq is requesting that US troops involved in a raid on Sunday be prosecuted. Though the raid was carried out with the approval of the Iraqi government, the Prime Minister is calling for the release of six insurgents seized in the raid and for charges against the American fighting men who accomplished the mission. In these Obama days of goodwill and dialog, I suppose doing one’s duty to country even at the risk of life and limb is out of place, if not criminal.

For those who wonder how this demand could be possible considering all Americans have sacrificed to liberate and rebuild the country, look no further than the example of the man in the Oval Office. An administration that distrusts it own soldiers, coddles enemy combatants, greets two-bit tyrants and bows before robed despots is no threat to anyone—except our nation’s heroes.

What I am anxious to see is whether President Obama has the moral fortitude to stand against this, or will he (as history portends) throw them under the bus. Will he stand up for our troops who sacrifice so much? Considering his past record, things don’t look bright for our brave men and women in uniform. I hope I am wrong, but I expect Obama to continue his well develop habit of bowing.

When a once mighty nation is knocked down, other countries quickly flex new found muscle against those who previously could have annihilated them. We see this happening as country after country seems to believe the US is no longer a threat. This once great country has been brought to her knees—brought to her knees by an election. People turned out in droves to make a ‘historic’ vote overlooking lack of experience, confusing charisma with strength of character and trading the respect of our allies and the fear of our enemies for international impotence. Thankfully, this is a country of second chances—a new election comes around every two years!

Few things can be worse than the entire country of Afghanistan controlled by the Taliban. With this base Al-Qaida was able to train, mastermind and launch the horrific attacks against our soil and kill thousands of Americans whose only crime was showing up for work on time. Who can think of anything worse than that? The latest news forebodes something far worse, nuclear armed Pakistan potentially under the control of the Taliban. Imagine what Al-Qaida could have done with a nuke or two.

Recently, Pakistan has seeded control of a major area of northwestern Pakistan to the Taliban and allowed the imposition of Sharia law. Not satisfied with this (Do deals with the Devil ever turn out as planned?) the Taliban has extended its influence into a neighboring district bringing it to within 60 miles of the capital.

Though I have my problems with George W. Bush, and have written about them here, at least he was willing to fight even when the world said talk and understood how to deal with those who kill innocents. Perhaps having a cowboy who understood oak-tree justice as Commander-in-Chief was a good thing. Is it possible that our new presidents desire to play at peace has led to this? We no longer have a president who will scorn dictators or tell the world: “You’re either with us or against us!” With a president no longer willing to swing the big-stick all we have left in foreign policy is the soft-talk. I fear that when it comes to foreign policy and dealing with the enemy, “the spine has left the White House.”

Shortly after the attacks on 911, President Bush announced the new Office of Homeland Security. A good friend of mine was frightened by the potential for this new agency, seeing in it a potential for abuse of freedoms. I didn’t agree because I believed the reports that it was just a reorganization to increase communication among various organizations. We were early in the Bush administration and I, like many Americans, still thought he was a conservative. Besides, we had recently learned of glaring security problems through the attack. As a good American son, I have always been watchful of efforts to overstep by the government so I was put off guard by my trust for an individual. I forgot that the man sitting in the Oval Office is not the measure of our government, because that man will change every four to eight years.

Under George Bush we had an expansion of government beyond the nightmare of any conservative. His Ted Kennedy meets Robert Bork agenda left many confused and weakened his base and party—he is the primary reason we have Obama and the hip-pocket congress. On social issues and the military he was very conservative. I give him credit for preventing attacks after 911 and teaching the world that you could stand in many ways in relation to the US but standing against her was not wise.

Unfortunately, Bush’s expansion of government and runaway spending laid the groundwork for an administration with little respect for liberty and a hatred of capitalism. The Bush administration devised and pushed TARP bailouts, even forcing some banks to take money they didn’t need. This administration abused that leverage to seize an amount of control over the economic sector never seen before. The most recent example of this problem of failing to look long term is Homeland Security. It appears that the office created by Bush to protect the US against terrorists has turned against the most loyal, patriotic Americans among us as potential terrorists. The new profile of a terrorist is not a radicalized cell hidden in a New Jersey mosque or the mountains of Pakistan, but those Americans who are so dangerous as to believe in defending their country, to believe in defending their homes and, most shocking of all, to believe in the defending every American life—even inconvenient ones. The new terrorists for Barack Obama and his Office of Homeland Security are veterans who own guns and are pro-life. This makes sense though; as the bumper sticker reads: “Tyrants prefer unarmed victims.”

An idea for good in the hands of one president can be easily turned against our freedoms by another. Stop looking at any president—conservative, liberal or socialist—as savior and see them as potential oppressors. This was the example of our founders. Even George Washington, father of our country, was distrusted so long as he held that office. The potential for abuse was too great, even under a limited government. It is far greater now under this monstrosity of an expanded government touching all areas of our lives.

Class is in session. One small country surrounded by enemies is schooling the United States and the rest of the world on how to wage a War on Terror. Yes, the liberals will scream, the UN will demand a ceasefire, but unlike ours, the leaders of Israel understand they answer to their own people.

Our elected officials have forgotten whom they represent. By seeking the goodwill of the world’s elites sitting in the UN, they leave their own people without a voice. Many have decried the focus on American foreign policy on American interests. There seems to be an opinion afloat that the US should only take actions based on the world’s needs and world’s interests. Such a global focus is not only a recipe for inaction and defeat, but is itself immoral. When our government spends our money, speaks for our people and takes actions that endanger our sons and daughters their only consideration should be our interests. When France acts on the world stage they should have French interests in mind—the same goes for England, Belgium, or Russia.

In Israel, itself a very liberal country, you don’t see leaders losing sleep over the displeasure of the UN or anyone else. They understand that their lifespan is in direct proportion to the success of their military. The peoples around them have dedicated themselves—not to peaceful cohabitation, or even subjugation—but to the annihilation of Israel. Efforts to force Israel to trade land for peace and to develop a two state system have failed miserably. Israel has understood for a long time what we are just beginning to learn: the only thing that will back down a terrorist is death or fear of it.

Since 911 there have been no new attacks on US soil. This is probably going to be President Bush’s primary legacy. There have been attempts but nothing nearly as awful as the attack on the World Trade Center. There one reason why Osama Bin Ladin and Al Qaeda have not launched a major attack: making grand plans from your tunnel hideout is hard when your country is overrun by American soldiers and marines itching to put a bullet through your skull.

Our leaders must take a lesson from Israel: when facing an enemy intent on your destruction there is no option but to win. You can’t talk; you can’t reason; you can’t buy them off. The only option is victory. Are we as a people willing to pay the price? Are we willing to win our war against terrorists? Will our leaders allow us to win it?
